Behind Nadodi Mannan Success

Sri MGR Year 98, 28th July, Tuesday

For the Golden Jubilee year of Nadodi Mannan special post, I took some points from the book titled “Yarukku Vetri” written by our beloved Leader Puratchi Thalaivar MGR, a special edition released after the success of Nadodi Mannan in the year 1958, in that book he has mentioned the persons responsible for the success, the cooperation given by them, the name of the persons including the artists, script writers to name of the persons who did not show up in the title card. The post that was published on 21st August 2008 in srimgr.com the article and as well as the video were inspired from that book.

MGR’s bodyguard K.P.Ramakrishnan who also worked in the Nadodi Mannan movie had written the article with his son R.Govindaraj which was published in Dinamalar issue dated 26th October 2011, Trichy edition. He has forwarded that article to share with us through MGR blog.

In the article K.P.Ramakrishnan recollects that in the set of Kalai Arasi MGR was speaking about three persons who gave their help for Nadodi Mannan movie. The three people MGR lists is S.S.Vasan who granted movie camera for shooting the climax scene involving large and miniature sets, K.Subramaniam, the Director who helped our Thalaivar in supervising the movie and procuring colour negatives without any benefit for him and also helping him in outdoor shooting done in Munnar. Thirdly is the studio owner of Vijaya Vauhini, Nagi Reddy for his assistance in shooting the movie.

Below is the 50th year anniversary special post of Nadodi Mannan.

Anna’s Decree

Sri MGR Year 98, 19th July, Sunday

After MGR was ousted from DMK in 1972, the party high command and as well as the circle level speakers tried their best to make believe that MGR did not have love towards the Tamil language. They emphasized that MGR was singing duet with Jayalalaitha for the movie Ayirathil Oruvan when Anti Hindi agitation was on its peak.

We all know that the movie has only one duet “Naanamo” which was shot entirely in the studio. So how come a duet in Karwar? There is no such outdoor scenes shot for the movie. And all the MGR devotees and Fans know why our beloved Leader Puratchi Thalaivar MGR did not participated in the Anti Hindi agitation.

MGR’s bodyguard K.P.Ramakrishnan who acted as one of the rebels in Ayirathil Oruvan has mentioned the reason in the functions conducted by us. His son R.Govindaraj has forwarded an article that was published in Kumudham issue dated 6.11.2013, K.P.Ramakrishnan narrates the events that actually happened during the shooting of Ayirathil Oruvan in Karwar, how MGR tried to participate in the agitation and why he did not.

Immortal Musician

Sri MGR Year 98, 14th July, Tuesday

The news was discomforting to hear that the icon of melody music and King of Light Music (Mellisai Mannar) M.S.Viswanathan has passed away early this morning. MSV attended the Ayirathil Oruvan Silver Jubilee function on 1st September 2014 in Kamaraj Arangam, the crowd gave a standing ovation for his entrance but due to his health he only spoke for a minute.

MSV has scored music over 1200 movies including Tamil, Telugu, Kannada, Malayalam, Hindi etc. He has worked with our Thalaivar in numerous movies. MSV’s first film with MGR as music director is Jenovah (Genova) Malayalam movie which was released on 17.4.1953 later the Tamil version was released in June. His last film with MGR is also MGR’s last Maduraiyai Meeta Sundarapandian released on 14th January 1978.

His greatest background score to my knowledge is for the movie Ulagam Sutrum Valiban. He had worked tirelessly with MGR to create a masterpiece. We can easily re collect which scene it is by just listening to the back ground music.

At this time Poongkodi feeling sad wants to take a sea journey. Chengappan thinking he is clever hoists a pirate flag over his ship. Manimaran spots this ship and attacks. In the court the King/dictator comes down from the throne and takes up the hand of Manimaran and request him to rule the kingdom. But Manimaran turns down the offer, asks him to remain in power and to rule as a good king with the help of newly found commander (the pirate leader) and also he adds that he wishes to continue to serve the people as a doctor rather that a king.

PUNCH DIALOGS

The dialog writer R.K.Shanmugam during the silver jubilee function celebrated in Kamaraj Arangam on 1st September 2014 told us that the dialogs were told by MGR and he only wrote on behalf of him.

The movie has brilliant dialogs, the unforgettable MGR and Nambiyar war of the words, MGR explaining about his part with the rebels to Jayalalitha & scene before the climax, talk with Puthur Natarajan about helping people of Neithal Nadu, Jayalalitha telling MGR that he is God etc. are worth mentioning.

Some important dialogs compilation, captured during the 101st day of Ayirathil Oruvan release in Albert theatre.

The most famous MGR and Nambiyar dialog war, captured by MGR Devotee Sathya on the 101st day of Ayirathil Oruvan movie.

2. The first movie for MGR and B.R.Panthulu combination.

3. First time two colour movies released in a single year (1965) Enga Veetu Pillai and Ayirathil Oruvan.

4. Ayirathil Oruvan is one of the two movies heavily centered around the liberation from slavery and exhibiting leadership qualities of MGR the other one is Padagotti.

5. Along with other Emgeeyar Pictures movies (Nadodi Mannan, Adimai Penn and Ulagam Sutrum valiban) Ayirathil Oruvan was also re-released as digitized version on 14th March 2014.

6. On the first release the movie had 100 days run. After 49 years the movie was digitized and released in DTS audio on 14.3.2014, had 190 days run in Albert complex.

7. Ayirathil Oruvan helped MGR in getting a massive reputation in his political career.

8. Apart from many movies Ayirathil Oruvan enjoys re run in theatres all these 49 years and as well as shown in Television and most preferred buys in DVD.

9. M.N.Nambiyar also sang in the chorus for the song Atho Antha paravai.

10. The story is partly based on Rafael Sabatini’s Captain Blood but the movie is entirely different in terms of the character of Dr.Peter Blood and Manimaran (more about this comparison in another post)

11. As stated in many websites that Ayirathil Oruvan is copy of Errol Flynn starred Captain Blood (1935) and Burt Lancaster starrer Crimson Pirate (1952), it is nothing to do with Crimson Pirate the only resemblance is both are pirate based movies.
